For those who find 5km/h too slow, Budapest offers speedboats. This is a completely different animal from the lazy river cruises.
Two Types of Speed
1. The Adrenaline Ride (e.g., RedJet)
This is a rollercoaster on water.
- The Boat: High-horsepower jet boat.
- The Maneuvers: 360-degree spins, power stops, high-speed drifts.
- The Route: They speed up in the wider sections of the Danube (usually south of the city center) but cruise slowly past the Parliament for photos.
- Getting Wet: Guaranteed. Ponchos provided.
2. The Private "Water Limousine" (Venetian Style)
Think polished mahogany wood and leather seats (like a Riva boat).
- The Vibe: James Bond.
- The Experience: You zip from point A to B or just cruise in style. The captain can go fast, but it's smooth speed, not jerky spins.
- Capacity: Usually 2-8 people.
- Price: €150 - €400 per hour.
Why do it?
- Time: You can see the whole city riverfront in 30 minutes.
- Style: Arriving at a riverside restaurant (like A38 or Kiosk) by private boat is a power move.
- Exclusivity: No annoying tourists blocking your view.
Practicalities
- Departs from: Various docks, mostly near the Chain Bridge or specialised marinas.
- Best Time: Sunset. Speeding towards the setting sun with the wind in your hair is unmatched.
Warning: Not suitable for those with back problems or pregnant women (specifically the RedJet style). The luxury limousines are fine for everyone.
